John Runyan joined Sachs Waldman in 1979 and became a shareholder in
1984. Since 1997, he has served as the firm's Managing Director.
Mr. Runyan's practice is devoted to the representation of
both individuals and labor organizations, both public and
private sector, in employment related disputes. For twenty
five years, he represented the women in the Detroit Police
Department in Schaefer v. Tannian, a class action
which successfully challenged the Department's sexually discriminatory
hiring, promotion and compensation practices. He has also
successfully represented a large number of individual employees
before administrative agencies and in both state and federal
courts.
Mr. Runyan has served as a member of the adjunct faculty at Wayne State University
Law School for the past twenty five years where he teaches
a class in Employment Discrimination Law. He serves as the
firm's expert on matters relating to Title VII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act, the Age Discrimination
in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
He has also served as an Arbitrator, Mediator and Facilitator
in employment-related disputes. Mr. Runyan has been listed
in each edition of Woodward & White's 'The Best Lawyers
in America' since 1989.
Mr. Runyan is a graduate of the University of Michigan (AB, 1969) and the Wayne
State University Law School (J.D. 1972, Cum Laude). After
graduating from law school, he clerked for federal district
judge Stephen J. Roth of the United States District Court
for the Eastern District of Michigan. Mr. Runyan is a member
of the State Bar of Michigan and is admitted to practice before
the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of
Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States District
Courts for the Eastern and Western
Districts of Michigan.
